Fire on Board – The Worst Scenario
Every skipper hopes it never happens, but the reality is harsh: a fire on board can spread faster than you think. Plastics, textiles, fuel, and electrical systems can all become ignition sources. Tight spaces and limited ventilation make the situation even worse.
Real Incidents Show Why Preparedness Matters
In recent years, several boat fires in Estonia have been caused by overheated engines, gas leaks, or electrical faults. In summer 2024, an 8-metre motorboat caught fire at Pirita Marina; another explosion on Lake Peipus was triggered by leaking propane gas.

New Equipment Requirements in Estonia
Since 10 November 2025, new national safety regulations require small boats operating more than 5 nautical miles offshore or with engines over 25 kW to carry at least one 2 kg fire extinguisher and a fire blanket. A first aid kit is mandatory on all small craft. Read more on Riigi Teataja.
